Only a small and dwindling proportion of Southampton’s population will remember its trams as it is now over 70 years since the last one ran to carry passengers on 31st December 1949, setting off from the Floating Bridge for Shirley at around 11.00pm. Festooned with lights and amid crowds of onlookers it rattled off into history. This is a fascinating look back to how the city and its suburbs looked all those years ago.
